Maysville, KY (May 21, 2012) The 2012 MCTC student poetry contest winners have been announced. The students were recognized at the annual Poetry Showcase held April 19 on the Maysville Campus.
Donna Hurst, student on the Maysville Campus, won first place for her poem Earthquakes, Tornadoes, amp; Snow: A mothers thoughts. Elizabeth Peeff, also from the Maysville Campus, was awarded second place for her poem The Coming Storm. Caitlin Hay, student on the Donald W. Kiser Paris Extension received third place for her poem Savoir-Faire.
Anne Shelby, whose poetry collection Appalachian Studies won a Kentucky Literary Award and was nominated for the Appalachian Writers Association Book of the Year spoke about the strength of the writing in the finalists poems, said Lynn Shaffer, associate professor of English. She has said that she found something [she] liked in each one. It is a pleasure to see students talent recognized by an award-winning writer, not because we did not already know their talent existed but because we want our students to get the formal recognition that they deserve.
