MCTC Lineman Program Named Bellwether Award Finalist

Maysville, KY – Maysville Community and Technical College has been named a Bellwether Award finalist in recognition of its Lineman Training Program, which prepares students for work in the high-wage, high-demand field of utility power line installation, maintenance and repair.

MCTC was notified of the honor earlier this month by the Community College Futures Assembly, which sponsors the Bellwether Awards. The award program recognizes innovative practices leading community colleges into the future.

The college is a finalist in the category of Workforce Development, which focuses on efforts to provide training that directly related and designed for local industry and community needs.

“MCTC remains dedicated to meeting the demands of business and industry as well as providing opportunities for students to pursue vocations that offer high wages and job stability,” says MCTC President Dr. Stephen Vacik. “The Lineman Program and its success is evidence of our college commitment toward creating better lives for a better Kentucky.”

MCTC’s submission for the Bellwether Award outlined how the Lineman Program, which is administered through its Workforce Solutions division, has found success by partnering with area utility providers and contractors such as East Kentucky Power, Davis H. Elliott, Kentucky Utilities, American Electric Power, Kentucky Power, Pike Corp., Fleming-Mason Energy, and Grayson Electric to name a few.

“To say that we are excited to be named as a Bellwether finalist is an understatement,” said Brittany Corde, MCTC Director of Workforce Solutions. “Our job placement rate for graduates of our Lineman Program is near one hundred percent. We generally have a waiting list to get into the program. To see that hard work be recognized in this way is a testament to the efforts of our instructors, industry partners as well as our students.”

The Community College Futures Assembly meets annually as an independent organization to identify the current issues colleges are facing and to recognize selected trend-setting Bellwether Award programs that are worthy of other colleges replicating.

Finalists will present to the Community College Futures Assembly at its annual meeting in February. The 2019 Bellwether Award Winners will be announced at the meeting’s closing session.
