Andrew Lowery, a student at the Licking Valley Campus of Maysville Community and Technical College (MCTC) has been named Student of the Month for January 2021.

Lowery’s nomination is made even more remarkable given that it came from Associate Professor of Psychology and Division Chair, Melinda Walker who has not met Andrew in person. Due to COVID, he is taking classes online and is in her Psychology 110 class. Walker’s only interaction with him has been virtual.

“Andrew is a very engaged, respectful and conscientious student,” says Walker. “His work is of the highest quality and he has been very successful in my class.” “His outstanding work ethic and high level of commitment and engagement are commendable, especially during these difficult times,” she concludes.

Before enrolling at MCTC Andrew had worked a series of jobs in area factories and he knew that he ultimately wanted to do something different. He is now pursuing an English degree by beginning his college career at MCTC.

Upon the news of this recognition, Lowery offered a nod of appreciation and encouragement to anyone pursuing higher education during these trying times.

When students return to campus, he also mentions that you'll likely find him back in class wearing one of his signature Hawaiian shirts. When you spot him, be sure to offer him congratulations.
