EMS students learn life-saving techniques
Published on Oct 6, 2025
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) students at Maysville Community and Technical College
recently participated in an auto extrication exercise assisted by Maysville Fire Department
(MFD).
Auto extrication is the process of removing a person who is trapped in a damaged vehicle after a motor vehicle accident has occurred.
Students were challenged with handling patient care, deciding which of them should be extricated first based on access and the severity of their injuries.
The main purpose of this exercise is to remove the vehicle around the victim, rather
than the victim from the vehicle. This allows the team at work to minimize any further
injuries to the patient.
Throughout the exercise, students learned how to recognize and treat trauma patients in the field overall. Having these skills is critical to a career in EMS and first response.
“By exposing EMS students to this exercise, they have gained valuable experience in the crucial skill of determining which patients are at higher risk in these situations,” said Donald Fryman, EMS program coordinator. “Though the goal is to save as many as possible, our students should be able to recognize the importance of saving those who are most accessible and viability through triage techniques. Thank you to MFD for the assistance in this exercise.”
