The application deadline for the Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) program at Maysville
Community and Technical College has been extended.
The MLT program prepares students to become professionals in the field, qualifying them through academic and applied science education.
Technicians provide services and research in medical laboratory science and related areas in rapidly changing healthcare systems. Services include performing tests to analyze body fluids, tissue and other substances in core areas.
These core areas include immunohematology (blood banking), microbiology, hematology, chemistry, urinalysis and immunology.
The MLT program is being expanded to the Rowan Campus, allowing MCTC to admit two cohorts of students annually for the first time.
“I am excited to admit the first cohort of MLT students to the Rowan campus this fall! The program will be delivered in a hybrid format, allowing greater flexibility and increased access to our students,” Michelle Thoroughman, program coordinator, remarked. “MLT is a high-demand, high-wage career option for students interested in health care who do not want to be involved with direct patient contact and will help fulfill the need for future lab employees in hospitals along I-64.”
The five-year, $2.3 million grant was awarded in 2023 and funded through the US Department of Education Title III Strengthening Institutions grant.
The grant focuses on developing new and enhancing existing high-demand career programs by funding course redesign, new equipment, updated learning spaces, new faculty positions and professional development.
The MLT program is Work Ready KY eligible, meaning qualifying students can access free tuition when seeking these credentials.
Credential options for the program include an associate in applied science, a Phlebotomist Certificate, and a Phlebotomy for the Healthcare Worker Certification. With full-time status, prospective students can earn their degree in two years.
