Her journey showcases the transformative power of education and support during challenging times.

In 2013, April’s unemployment benefits ceased while she was in the middle of her semester at MCTC. She was faced with a difficult decision: continue her education without knowing how to provide for her family or drop out of school to seek immediate employment.

That’s when she discovered the Ready to Work Program.

The Ready to Work Program at MCTC is designed to assist low-income parents in achieving their educational and career goals. For qualifying students, it offers part-time employment opportunities, comprehensive student support, and career preparation.

Through the program, April was able to stay in school while providing financial stability for her family. She worked part-time in the MCTC office under the guidance of Paula Lewis, Director of the Ready to Work Program at MCTC, gaining a mentor who would have a profound impact on her life.

April Carter with a woman from MCTC“I learned more about myself in two years working in this program than I had in 30 years,” April shared. “I came out of my shell, gained confidence, and realized my full potential. This program helped me complete my education and become a role model for my family.”

While participating in Ready to Work, April pursued the Medical Assistant Program and graduated with an associate in applied science degree. Today, she has been thriving as a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) for nearly a decade.

April’s story is just one of many from this program, which continues to serve as a lifeline for students balancing school, work, and family responsibilities.

“I would recommend this program to anyone looking to better themselves and their families,” April says. “The opportunities and support I received changed my life, and I’ll forever be grateful.”
