Lear 35 business jet to expand AMT education at MCTC

Maysville Community and Technical College is pleased to announce the arrival of a Lear 35 business jet, which will support the Aviation Maintenance Technician (AMT) program this fall.
The AMT program exposes students to inspection, repair, service, and overhaul of aircraft and engines. Students enrolled work with service and technical manuals, procedures, equipment, diagnostic problems, and repair work.

The Lear 35 will be utilized in student training and coursework beginning on day one of the fall 2026 semester, according to Kevin Woodruff, AMT program coordinator.

“The Lear 35 adds a more advanced level to their training, in modern jet aircraft versus small aircraft—like our Piper Cherokee (a general aviation aircraft),” Woodruff said.

Students enrolled in the AMT program will study every system on the Learjet, using it as needed. The systems that students will focus on include engines, landing gear, electronics, structures, and more.

Woodruff noted that studying the engines is one of the “big” benefits of training with the equipment. Students will have the opportunity to work on and run TFE-731 engines, some of the first turbofan engines to be designed specifically for business aviation.

“Having a jet aircraft will help prepare the students for jobs in the airline industry, GE, and many others. All these companies like seeing that a new hire has jet experience, which may give the students a leg up over other candidates who do not,” remarked Woodruff.

The fall 2026 semester begins on August 17, 2026. To apply for the aviation program or view other paths at MCTC, go to maysville.kctcs.edu.
