LVC nursing students participate in live demo

students participating in a crash simulation with local first respondersNursing students on the Licking Valley Campus of Maysville Community and Technical College recently participated in a crash simulation with local first responders.

In collaboration with Harrison County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and Harrison County Fire Department, students observed a live demonstration of a vehicle extrication.

“This allowed them to see, in real time, the technical process and coordination required to safely remove individuals from a motor vehicle following a crash,” said Hillary Poe, a nursing instructor on the Licking Valley Campus.

One student volunteered to simulate a victim as others observed first responders conduct a full extraction. Witnessing the progression of care from extrication to initial assessment, stabilization, and transfer to a stretcher and ambulance, students gained valuable insight into pre-hospital care and patient handling in emergencies.

“This experience offered a practical perspective on emergency response that is difficult to replicate in the classroom. It reinforced the importance of teamwork, communication, and rapid clinical judgment, while also helping students better understand the roles of EMS and fire personnel in patient care,” Poe said.

The simulation included multiple victims, giving students the chance to observe how emergency personnel conduct rapid assessments and prioritize care.

Students were introduced to mass casualty principles, including triage processes and decision-making guidelines for allocating resources effectively in high-acuity scenarios.

“We are grateful for the partnership with Harrison County EMS and the Harrison County Fire Department in providing this opportunity for our students,” Poe concluded.
