Hunter Jordan singing and playing guitarHunter Jordan, a 2023 alumnus of Maysville Community and Technical College, will appear on The Voice, a reality show featuring competitive singing and celebrity mentors.

Jordan began exploring music at 6 years old, learning guitar and later participating in musical theater. What started as a hobby gradually became something more serious after high school.

Encouraged by one of his teachers to attend MCTC for versatility and affordability, Jordan initially planned to pursue blue-collar work in the electrical field.

While earning his GOTS degree, he reconnected with a buddy who was also into the musical lifestyle, burning his passion for performing even more.

“He was doing music on the road, making a lot of money, and had established a name for himself. It kind of inspired me. When he heard me play, he encouraged me to play a show. And I did,” Jordan said.

After playing his first show, Jordan admitted to “catching the bug” and said ever since then, “It’s just been growing, and growing, and growing.”

Jordan found himself receiving more support in his classes than he had anticipated, leading him to gain more confidence in himself as a performer.

“I’ve always wanted to get out and play, but being around other guys who were supportive with that helped. When we were finished with our work, we’d bring our guitars, and we would just play. That kind of brought it (his confidence) out,” Jordan said.

Brandin Perkins, Jordan’s instructor, played a key role in Jordan’s music career, he added.

“I actually had a TikTok that went viral that had him in it…I was playing (guitar) in class, and my friend was filming it. I was singing the parts, and then Brandin came in on a high harmony part, and it just tied everything together. He was a big part of my social media kind of blowing up. He was awesome,” Jordan remarked.

Perkins commented on his relationship with Jordan.

“I had the privilege of teaching Hunter in the Electrical Technology Program for two years, and he is one of those rare students who excels both technically and creatively. He is an exceptionally intelligent, disciplined, and genuinely good young man,” Perkins said. “Seeing his musical talent grow alongside his dedication to learning was inspiring, and I’m incredibly proud of what he’s accomplished. Seeing him take the stage on The Voice is well-deserved, and I have no doubt he will continue to do great things.”

Jordan shared some advice for other alumni who may be interested in a similar path to his.

“I would say, in small rural areas, it seems like it’s impossible. It seems like you have to fight a lot harder than most people would. With a lot fewer opportunities in that field, I think that’s more rewarding. I don’t think that you should listen to anybody who says that you can’t. There is a community here that is very supportive for anybody who wants to go after their dreams, especially in the arts.”

To support Jordan on his musical journey, he suggested listening to his music on Spotify, Apple Music, iTunes, or another streaming service.

The season premiere for The Voice will be Monday, February 23. Jordan encouraged others to tune in and see how the season goes for him.
