Grant to help MCTC support parenting students

Published on Sep 22, 2025

Maysville Community and Technical College was recently awarded the Parenting Student Support Planning Grant through the Council on Postsecondary Education (CPE).

The grant, providing up to $50,000, will enable MCTC to assess the needs of student parents, thereby reducing barriers for them and ensuring the necessary support is in place for their success in college and beyond.

“MCTC is honored to receive the Parenting Student Support Planning Grant from the Council on Postsecondary Education. This grant allows us to better understand the unique challenges faced by student-parents and to work alongside community partners to create real, sustainable solutions,” remarked Christy Kissick, a success coach on the Rowan Campus.

As part of the efforts being put forth for the grant, staff will utilize the funding to take several courses of action—ultimately bringing the intent to fruition.

First, staff will conduct a needs assessment of parenting students at the college. Then, the plan will progress toward building partnerships with community partners, creating an action plan with strategies and resources, and piloting at least one early solution.

An early solution may look like a childcare referral hub, evening and weekend care resources, or even a student-parent task force.

“Supporting parenting students is not only about helping them succeed today — it’s about strengthening families and planting the seeds for future generations of college graduates,” Kissick continued.
