MCTC hosts 56th annual commencement ceremony

Maysville Community and Technical College recently held its 56th commencement ceremony
at the Montgomery County Arena in Mount Sterling.
With more than 170 students participating in the ceremony, graduates and their families heard remarks, received merchandise from the MCTC Alumni Association and more.
The ceremony opened with invocation, given by Nola Roberts. Roberts was among those who participated in the ceremony, receiving an associate in applied science in Human Services.
Following invocation, MCTC President/CEO Dr. Laura McCullough and MCTC Board of Directors Chair Jason Slone welcomed attendees to the ceremony before presenting the President’s Award of Excellence, given to one graduating student from each campus.
This year’s recipients were Katy Linville (Licking Valley), McKinnley Dietrich (Maysville), Christopher Humphries (Montgomery) and Maranda Swartz (Rowan).
Dietrich and Swartz gave remarks to their fellow graduates before the presentation
and conferring of degrees.
“I have had mentorship both in and out of the classroom, and have been guided to see the value in my work,” Dietrich said. “The consistent encouragement I have received from many faculty and staff members here at Maysville has pushed me further than I thought I could go.”
She continued, “To all of you today: whenever you look back, remember what you have achieved, and whenever you look ahead, know that you possess the ability to achieve even more. Be grateful for all the opportunities that allowed you to sit here today and walk across this stage…Best of luck to each of you as you chase your dreams and reach for your goals.”
During her remarks, Swartz focused on the challenges that she faced during her student life and shared words of gratitude to those around her.
“There have been some major road bumps on my way, as I’m sure many of you have had as well. Ups and downs and curves that I didn’t expect, sick family, the birth of my second child, and changes to my degree…I’ve even asked myself why I started in the first place,” Swartz said.
She continued, “I couldn’t have done it without the support I had from my amazing
and supportive family and friends, and definitely not without the supportive faculty
and staff I was surrounded by on our Rowan campus. They weren’t just my coworkers,
they became my friends.”
Following their remarks, graduates were presented by Dr. Dana Calland, vice president of Academic Services, and degrees were conferred by McCullough.
