Maysville Institute of Culinary Arts Bakery is now open for the semester.
The bakery is an extension of the College Café, run by students and faculty at Maysville Community and Technical College.
Babz Goldman Nartowicz, Culinary Arts Program coordinator at MCTC, briefly discussed the delicious dishes to be offered at the bakery in the coming weeks.
Some staples of the bakery include cream horns, oatmeal raisin cookies, chocolate chip cookies and quiche. Other specialty items are added to the menu each week.
Babz and her students work throughout class to prepare these items fresh each week including baking, garnishing and decorating the items.
Brooke Chapman, a first-year student enrolled in MCTC’s bakery and culinary classes, discussed her role at the bakery.
Alongside her classmates, Brooke spends over 10 hours preparing dishes for the bakery set up that week.
She attends class three days a week and works in the bakery at the Cox Building, totaling 40 hours of her time. Brooke spends about 20 hours in each place.
“I love my classes and my job, and I love being in the College Café kitchen. It has become my home away from home and I’ve experienced so much growth in my short time in classes,” Brooke remarked.
The experiences gained by Brooke at MCTC will help her in the professional world.
From receiving her food service safety certification to learning many other culinary skills, Brooke has felt privileged to fulfill her work study hours in the College Café.
“I hope I spend the rest of my life yelling “corner” and “behind” (terms often used when sharing a kitchen),” Brooke said.
The college bakery will be open for the next seven weeks on Wednesdays and Thursdays. The bakery will be closed on Thanksgiving.
The bakery’s hours on Wednesdays are from 2 to 6 pm.
The bakery’s hours on Thursdays are from 9 am to 3 pm.
The café side of the culinary school will be open for seating, leaving the option for carry out or enjoying baked goods at the café.
