Recent nursing grads from the Licking Valley Campus of Maysville Community and Technical College were able to breathe a little easier due to a generous contribution made to their program earlier this semester.
Bettye Marshall and her daughter, Sheila Currans, gifted the program just over $7,000, enough to cover the fees related to students’ required licensure exam.
Marshall, a retired nurse, was the Director of Nursing at Harrison Memorial Hospital (HMH) when Licking Valley Campus was being developed. She worked at HMH for 43 years.
Currans is also a nurse and has held many roles during her 48 years at Harrison Memorial Hospital, including CEO.
Both were involved in helping establish and support the nursing program at the Maysville and Licking Valley campuses.
“Several in our extended families are in health care and several are nurses,” said Currans. “We value the work they do and know from experience the difference they can make in the lives of a community, so supporting local nurses is very important to us.”
The scholarship is named in honor of Currans’ father, Harry Martin Marshall, who died in 2006.
Melanie Morris, assistant program coordinator of the associate degree nursing program, says she is so thankful for the Marshall family’s contribution and the profound difference it will make in the lives of her students.
“This little community where I was born and raised, has the biggest heart,” says Morris. “We a group of fourteen wonderful students getting ready to be nurses and our little college on the hill couldn’t be prouder.”
The ADN program prepares graduates to provide and manage patient care and to become valuable members within the discipline of nursing.
In addition to the Licking Valley Campus, the ADN program is also offered on the Maysville Campus and the Montgomery Campus in Mount Sterling.
