Student emergency fund, “Nursing Next Gen”, new welding lab among top priorities for MCTC Giving Day, set for April 25

Maysville Community & Technical College is pleased to announce the launch of its inaugural MCTC Giving Day on April 25 during Community College Month.

MCTC joins the Kentucky Community and Technical College System and the other 15 colleges in this 24-hour fundraiser.

“We are excited to join with our community, alumni and advocates to lend financial support to students facing financial hardships,” said Dr. Laura McCullough, MCTC President/CEO. “Funds will be used for need-based scholarships, emergency aid, nursing licensure exam fees, and other needs of students to help them stay in school and complete their education.”

With many families facing economic challenges and a state workforce shortage in targeted industries, McCullough said the need for student support has never been greater.

In a Fall 2022 financial wellness survey conducted by the college, 69% of students said they would have trouble getting $500 in cash or credit in an emergency. Just over 50% of students reported housing insecurity, and 23% of students had very low food security.

The student emergency fund addresses those barriers to student success by supporting students when they have an emergent financial need.

“At MCTC, we are dedicated to ensuring student success and removing pathway barriers,” said Cara Clarke, Director of Institutional Advancement.  “Giving Day provides a time focused on addressing areas of need identified as key inhibitors and necessary program enhancements.”

Contributions made during Giving Day will also go toward MCTC’s Nursing Next Gen initiative, which will help students offset the fees related to the NCLEX exam.

MCTC also plans to construct a welding lab for its Montgomery Campus and will put dollars from Giving Day toward those expenses.

Individuals, businesses, and organizations interested in supporting MCTC students can designate their gifts directly to the college, and early giving is already open.

MCTC also has an anonymous donor who has pledged up to $50,000 when certain fundraising milestones are met.
