MCTC gives students a ‘fresh start’

Maysville Community & Technical College prides itself on its commitment to removing the barriers prospective students face when in pursuit of a better life.

One of the ways the college does that is through Fresh Start, a student debt payback program.

Fresh Start is intended to help students who have previously attended MCTC, did not graduate, and want to come back to MCTC to finish their credentials.

Students who owe a balance traditionally are ineligible to register for classes until the balance is paid. The Fresh Start program works to remove that obstacle for eligible students.

“Fresh Start gives our students the opportunity to come back to school after ‘life happened to them’ when they were enrolled in the past,” said Dr. Maggie Price, Director of Student Success. “MCTC believes everyone deserves a fresh start.”

Their prior debt owed to the college will be paid over time upon successful entry into a program and completion of the program requirements.

Each semester a student is successful, $500 is forgiven from their MCTC balance.

At the beginning of the semester, 66 students were enrolled with a total combined debt of $62,572.57.

The Fresh Start program is not a student loan forgiveness program and debt from other colleges will not be paid as a part of Fresh Start.

To be accepted into the program, students generally must register for a minimum of six credits each semester and earn a minimum of a "C" grade in each course. Students must also meet all financial aid student and account balance requirements.
