Aviation Maintenance program receives FAA approval

The Aviation Maintenance Technology (AMT) program at Maysville Community and Technical College (MCTC) took flight after the college received approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) earlier last month for the program’s airframe curriculum.

“We are thrilled that the FAA approved our Aviation Maintenance Technology program," said Perry Sloan, program coordinator. "We began classes with our first cohort of students last month, and we are looking forward to providing airports in our region and beyond with highly qualified and skilled employees who are prepared to serve this industry."

Sloan, a Morehead native, is a licensed commercial aircraft pilot with a flight instructor rating. He also carries inspector authorization credentials from the FAA, which allows him to inspect and approve annual and progressive aircraft maintenance and repairs to ensure they meet air safety standards and regulations.

Under Sloan’s instruction, students will gain expertise in the inspection, repair, service, and overhaul of aircraft and engines.

The program was made possible in part due to a $330,000 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF).

Classes take place at the Fleming-Mason Airport, and the first cohort of students began coursework on August 14.

Students enrolled in the AMT program are eligible for the Work Ready Kentucky Scholarship, which will pay the program’s tuition in its entirety.
