Poster Competition to Showcase MCTC Student Service Projects

(March 30, 2011) Maysville Community and Technical Colleges (MCTC) Service-Learning Office has announced the Second Annual Service-Learning Poster Competition. The competition is open to students from all MCTC campuses that have completed service-learning projects during the Fall 2010 and Spring 2011 semesters. Service-Learning is a teaching and learning method that encourages students to apply academic knowledge as service within their communities.

Instructor and Literati Faculty Advisor Donna Slone had this to say about MCTC Licking Valley Campus student Mike Masseys experience: Mikes poster provided an excellent visual of his service-learning project of organizing a book drive for the Owsley County Library. Mike enjoys helping people and believes reading is the key to academic success. His service learning project combined these two passions. Massey was one of the competition winners.

Each poster will be evaluated based on how thoroughly the project details are presented and the evidence connecting the project to a class or extracurricular experience. Other winners from last years competition included a fundraiser for Peoples Clinic in Morehead, which offers free medical services to low-income families, and a community awareness project for the dialysis treatment, Epogen.

Students who will be entering the contest should submit an entry form to the Service-Learning Office by April 8th. The poster competition will be held on April 27th at the Rowan Campus.

More than 50 students competed in last years poster competition, said Hannah Diedrichsen of MCTCs Service-Learning Office. I hope more students will participate this year. We enjoy showing off their amazing projects.
