Construction Technology Program Holds Ribbon Cutting for Newly Constructed House

by Brandy Esham

The Construction Technology program at the Rowan Campus of Maysville Community and Technical College (MCTC) along with the Morehead-Rowan County Chamber of Commerce recently held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the newly constructed project house. The project house is a fully functional 3 bedrooms, 2 bath home located at 90 Grapevine Lane in Morehead. Over the course of two years, nearly 120 students from all walks of life have worked on this house under the knowledgeable instruction of MCTC Construction Technology Program Coordinator, John Earl King.

The house, which is 1,400 square feet of living space and 640 square feet of garage space, took 4 semesters to build. Students, including a large number of dual-credit students from Rowan County High School and Lakeside Christian Academy, were able to see the house come together as they worked on every aspect of the building work, from the foundation to the landscaping.

“The program is a lot of hands-on-learning for real-life experience”, relates King, “Helping build a real house, from start to finish, is an experience these students will be able to take with them as they enter their career.”

King tries to help all of his students gain the job skills they need to be successful once they graduate. He even incorporates other programs into the building work, including the HVAC program which helped install the heating and air conditioning for the house.

“It is important that we not only tell the students what skills they’ll need to get a job, but we teach them those skills and help them to master those skills before entering the workforce.”

The Construction Technology program at MCTC is currently enrolling students for the fall semester. If you are interested in learning carpentry skills in a hands-on environment, please contact John Earl King for more information at or visit our Construction Technology program page at
