MCTCS LICKING VALLEY CAMPUS CELEBRATES 20 YEARS OF KIDS COLLEGE

We have taught the children about dance, art, music, food, geology, history, computers, graphic design, electricity, birds, robots, rockets, math, dissecting frogs, and the list goes on, said LVC Assistant Registrar Lori Gaunce.

Kids College, held on each of Maysville Community and Technical Colleges main campuses, is anything but a typical summer camp. LVC has another reason, however, to be excited about Kids College this summer as it marks 20 years of helping children have fun while learning on their campus.

A celebration will be held Friday, July 13, at Flat Run Veterans Park from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. for all Kids College participants and their families. Food will be provided along with water races, sack races, a water balloon toss, and many other activities.

Kids College was the brain child of Pam Stewart and Barbara Campbell who were colleagues at the college, which was known at the time as Maysville Community College, said Licking Valley Campus Director Bruce Florence. From the first, the program was accepted by parents and endorsed by teachers in the community. Now, we often hear parents mention that vacations are planned around Kids College. Grandparents also invite their grandchildren to visit during this week.

The Kids College curriculum at LVC is designed to help students six to twelve years of age reach beyond their grade level. Through hands-on activities students over the years have been challenged to attain higher goals and successes.

My oldest daughter attended Kids College for seven years, said Gaunce. She is now a Kids College assistant professor. Some of our other past students have now become professors and assistant professors at Kids College. It is so much fun to reminisce about the past and it is a delight to think about the future.

MCTC Workforce Solutions is pleased that Kids College enrollments continue to grow each year, said Gwyn Gallenstein, Continuing Education and Community Service Coordinator on the Maysville Campus. Lisa Harmon has done a fantastic job this year planning the 20th Kids College camp at LVC.

We have a record number of students enrolled this year, said Lisa Harmon, Continuing Education and Community Services coordinator for Workforce Solutions at LVC. I am very excited to be a part of this community celebration of Kids College.
