The Lillian H. Rice Adult Education College Preparation Center was dedicated on May 12 to honor the commitment of Mrs. Rice to furthering adult education. The center is located on MCTCs Maysville Campus in one of the former biology labs in the Administration Building, room A-307.

Rice has served as a chairman of the Mason County Adult Education Advisory Board on several occasions and currently serves as a member of the board. Also, she currently serves on the MCTC Board of Directors.

Commenting on why Rice was chosen for this honor, Director Bill Teegarden says, Ms. Rice has been very outspoken about adult education in our community. She is constantly encouraging people to complete their GED diplomas and go to college. She has also been recognized on several occasions by Kentucky Adult Education for her volunteer service. Teegarden has been the director of the program at MCTC for more than five years.

The center has expanded to providing services for Mason, Robertson, Lewis, Bracken, and Nicholas counties. These five counties were also selected to receive funding through performance incentives last year. Only 18 other counties were chosen to be funded in Kentucky. Approximately 1500 total individuals have been served by the centers in some capacity this year alone.

We have already reached our goals that will put us in line to receive funding again this coming year, says Teegarden. Once testing is completed, the center will have assisted nearly 200 people with receiving GED diplomas this year.

To qualify for this funding, the center is required to meet certain performance levels within 13 areas of adult education and college readiness.

Mrs. Rice has been a lifelong supporter of students and their successes, says MCTC President Dr. Ed story. There is hardly an individual whose life has not been touched in some way by Mrs. Rice. She continues to be an inspiration to all of us and this dedication will ensure that many future lives will be enhanced by the assistance that is provided in these classrooms.

In addition to GED assistance, the center offers pre-college preparation for students, helps students test out of developmental classes, offers tutoring, and coaches individuals heading into the workforce. English as a second language and computer skills classes are available as well.
