Maysville Residents Learn New Skills through MCTC-Housing Authority Partnership

Maysville, KY (December 16, 2011). Maysville Community and Technical College (MCTC) recently partnered with the Housing Authority of Maysville to provide classes for local housing residents and community members. Fourteen classes were held at the Amo Peters and Beechwood community centers, both located in Maysville.

MCTC implemented some of the most awesome and wonderful classes, said Housing Authority of Maysville Director Missy Humphries. Anyone could come. They helped them write resumes and taught them how to use Microsoft Word, and Excel, along with basic internet and keyboarding skills.

Attendees could choose from a variety of classes including website creation, basic and advanced computer training, nurse-aid basics, and Zumba as well as CPR and first aid. Career Craze and a culinary class were offered for elementary and middle school children. During the summer break arts and crafts classes were also offered children along with fun events, including face painting, a movie day, talent show, water balloon fight, ping pong tournament, scavenger hunt, and Halloween party.

Scholarships were provided for twenty students who attended the Kids College held on MCTCs Maysville Campus during July of this year.

Program Director and Maysville native Crystal Marshall considered it an honor to be a part of this project.

We worked with community residents, parents, volunteers, MCTC students, staff members, and the Resident Council of the Housing Authority, says Marshall. This was in addition to support from the Mason County Public Library, WFTM, UK Cooperative Extension, the Ledger Independent, and the City of Maysville. We were able to successfully produce a wide variety of activities and programs ranging from health and exercise to educational enrichment, and arts and crafts.

MCTCs Workforce Solutions department was happy to have the opportunity to work with the Housing Authority of Maysville and their residents, said Gwyn Gallenstein, Workforce Solutions CE/CS coordinator. We look forward to any opportunity to assist in future projects that may come available.

This was a wonderful partnership, said Humphries. I really wish we could have continued this. We will never be able to figure out just how much this program was worth for those who attended. It was absolutely priceless.

The Housing Authority of Maysville provides public housing through the Housing Choice Voucher Program, or Section 8, administered by the Department of Housing and Urban Development while also assisting with rent payments through public landlords.
