MAYSVILLE, Ky. (Aug. 31, 2017) – Maysville Community and Technical College (MCTC) has set new records for the highest number of graduates and credentials awarded at its Maysville, Licking Valley, Montgomery and Rowan campuses. For the 2016-17 academic year, 813 students graduated from MCTC, the most ever in the college’s history, which spans nearly half a century. The total number of credentials, 1,957, increased by more than 14 percent over the previous year, and also set a record as the most ever for MCTC.
“Students, both right out of high school and those looking to better their career options, are realizing more and more about the great benefits to beginning higher education with us,” said Dr. Steve Vacik, president of MCTC. “We can get students credentials quickly and into a better job, or we can help them earn an associate degree at a fraction of the cost of attending a four-year college or university.”
MCTC is part of the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS), which also set new records for graduates and credentials. In the 2016-17 academic year, 16,147 students graduated from KCTCS, which is an increase of 9 percent over the previous year. The record of 15,958 was set in 2013-14.
The total number of credentials, 34,502, increased by 12 percent over the prior year. Systemwide, associate degrees were up 3 percent, diplomas 23 percent and certificates 16 percent.
Some of the reasons for the record numbers include an increased emphasis on shorter-term credentials that lead to high demand jobs, and students better understanding the value of embedded certificates that can be included in associate degrees.
