MCTC Students Celebrate Medical Laboratory Professionals Week
Students in the Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) program at Maysville Community and Technical College (MCTC) plan to step back and reflect on Medical Laboratory Professionals Week April 20-26. “This week is a time to recognize and show appreciation for the dedication and hard work of all individuals who are working behind the scenes to provide valuable diagnostic information to your health care providers,” states Michelle Thoroughman, Program Coordinator and Instructor. “It’s a time to say ‘thank you’ to all medical laboratory professionals in our area.”
MLT’s play an essential role in diagnosing diseases and conditions by collecting various specimens from patients. Laboratory results currently contribute 70-80% of the diagnostic information used by healthcare providers. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, MLT’s are ranked among the top 20 Kentucky occupations with the most annual job openings and top 20 fastest growing occupations in Kentucky (that generally require an associate’s degree). While hospitals are expected to be the leading employers of medical laboratory technicians, job growth in medical and diagnostic laboratories and physician’s offices is also expected to increase.
“MCTC launched the Associate in Applied Science (AAS) in Medical Laboratory Technician program in August 2013 and the first MLT cohort will graduate in May 2015,” stated Thoroughman. “Because of the demand for technicians, we anticipate upon completion of the program, our graduates will be successful in obtaining employment fairly quickly.”
The second MLT cohort will begin classes in August 2014, with limited space to only 12 participants. Registration for summer and fall classes is now open. For more program information contact Michelle Thoroughman at 606-759-7141, extension 66277.
